QP: Trick or Treat!

Posted on

It has been a while since my last post, but I thought what better way to celebrate one of my favorite holidays than with blog post? Happy Halloween!

Here are some interesting statistics about the spooky holiday I found via HalloweenStats.com:

  • 41 million: The estimated number of potential trick-or-treaters in 2010 – children 5 to 14 – across the United States.
  • 1.1 billion pounds: Pumpkin production by major pumpkin-producing states in 2010. Illinois produced an estimated 427 million pounds of the vined orange gourd. California, New York and Ohio were also major pumpkin-producing states, each with an estimate of more than 100 million pounds.
  • 409: Number of U.S. establishments that manufactured nonchocolate confectionary products in 2009. These establishments employed 16,974 people. California led the nation in this category, with 45 establishments.
  • 24.7 pounds: Per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2010.
  • 1,719: Number of costume rental and formal wear establishments across the nation in 2009.

I hope you all have a fun and safe holiday! Eat lots of candy, too!

Maximizing Media Coverage

Sometimes, it can be difficult to get your event covered or share it with the public.  What is a stimulating way to attract the media so they want to cover you or your event?  A good hook is essential.  The media will cover almost any event if there’s a good hook to it.  Think about it, Kim Kardashian’s Wedding, the Casey Anthony trial, Charlie Sheen’s drug addiction, the list goes on.  While some of these may not all be 100% newsworthy, the media has a field day over these events!

Newsworthiness of an event can be determined by the 5 W’s that you are all so familiar with and love (maybe):

WHO: Who will be at your event?  Is anyone sponsoring it?

WHAT: What can the media expect if they cover your story?  What would they be missing if they don’t cover your story?

Why Hire an Event Planner?

In the past, many people have questioned the idea of hiring an event planner.  Why hire a planner when it is something you can do yourself, right?  Well for some instances that is right, but for others, hiring an event planner will be in your best interest!

Save Money

Event planners have experience in planning events in the most cost-efficient ways possible.  They build relationships with vendors and often receive discounted rates that can also benefit their clients.  Compare this to the client alone calling the vendor, they will probably not receive the same discount as the event planner.  It is likely that event planners have worked with a range of budgets, so they will be able to come up with creative solutions to help the client stay within their budget.

Save Time

Planners can eliminate wasting time on searching for different venues and vendors as they will already have a few lists in mind.  Planners are employed to plan and execute events in the most organized and timely-fashioned way possible.  Also, keep in mind how much you think your time is worth among the other daily obligations you have.

Campus Events

Aside from pursuing my Master’s degree here at St. Bonaventure University, I also work in the University’s Events Management Office.  For those of you who don’t know, St. Bonaventure is a small, private school located in Western New York.  As a University that enrolls roughly about 2,000 undergraduate students, there are still many events that take place both on and off campus, day to day.

Events frequently held in the SBU Dining Hall

So what are some event planning techniques that St. Bonaventure uses that are working?  Well that is what I am about to share with you!  These are general techniques that can be used to keep events on track and organized.

The Benefits of Sponsorships

Sponsorship is quickly becoming one of the largest forms of marketing.  Whether you attend an event, turn on the TV, watch a movie, or go online you will see companies sponsoring other companies and/or brands.  During an event I was a part of this summer, I was truly able to see the value of sponsorship and the value it has for all parties.

As I previously mentioned, I interned at Sirius XM this summer and had the opportunity to work on and be a part of several of their events that they hosted both in and out of studios.  While the Lady Gaga and Gayle King interview was definitely one of my favorite moments there, another event also comes to mind.

One of Cosmo Radio’s (Sirius XM ch. 109) most popular talk shows is Wake Up with Taylor!  It could be the quirky hosts, Taylor and Kenny, the hot topics, or the fact that this show is always trying to come up with innovative ways to engage their listeners and fan-base.  Every Friday, they have a segment on their show called “Fat Kid Fridays” (they call themselves former fat kids).  They discuss a variety of topics regarding exercise or food and are often looking for new ways to exercise while staying entertained.

Soul Cycle

That’s where Soul Cycle comes in.  Soul Cycle is currently one of the most popular and talked about spinning classes in New York City.  They incorporate more than just a bike into the classes, whether it is upper body exercises or using bands while cycling.  It is often referred to as a “dance party on a bike.”  Wake Up with Taylor! host, Taylor Strecker, attended a few of these classes and even had head instructor, Laurie Cole, on the show many times.

Pinterest: An Event Inspiration?

I recently discovered Pinterest, the website that allows you to create your own virtual pin board.  For my Integrated Marketing Communications class I opted to do a presentation on this website, which helped me to become more comfortable with the site and fall even more in love with it.  There has been much speculation on whether or not Pinterest is something valuable or just another way to waste your time.

Visual Escape

When I first signed up for this site I was both overwhelmed and excited by all of the content I had to look at.  I then realized how useful it is for someone who is trying to set themselves apart in the event planning industry, like myself.  One of the great things about Pinterest is all the inspiration you can take away from it.
